General Announcements

The 3rd Annual Cushing Memorial Civil War Camp will be held on Friday June 6th in Fredonia.

All schools within Chautauqua County are invited to have their 11th grade students come for an entire day of activities at a Civil War encampment on the grounds of Fredonia High School. The camp is aimed at teaching students about the Civil War period through interactions with some of the best reenactors in the country.

Some of the topics included are The Life of a Soldier, Women of the Civil War Period, Civil War Medicine, School of Artillery, Signal Corps, The Story of Alonzo Cushing (our camp's namesake) and Confederate Position.

Also included in your full day of activities is a visit to the Barker Museum in Fredonia, where your students will learn about local history as they view the many artifacts on display in the museum. Schedules are tailor-made to your particular school so that we can accommodate your travel time to and from the camp. A lunch break is included in your schedule, during which you can visit one of the many fast food restaurants nearby or simply have your students bring their lunch to eat on the grounds.

The camp is grant funded at this time, so there is NO COST for your school to bring all of your 11th grade students.

Each school will also receive a FREE Civil War TEACHING KIT courtesy of the Teaching American History group here in our county.

Kits are provided to new schools only, so if you have attended the camp in the past you will not receive a new kit.

All schools who wish to attend must contact the Camp Director as soon as possible to reserve your space for this fantastic experience in the Civil War era. The deadline to register will be February 29th, 2008.

In the event that there is space available after the deadline, schools may apply to bring Middle School students as space is available.

This will be done on a first-come, first served basis for those schools who express an interest. Please advise us if your schools might like to bring Middle School students if there is that possibility. We hope to have a completed list of schools attending by mid-March.
