Message from President Rick Bates to Council Members

Greetings,

As we finish our second full year of the WSTCSS, we meet a transition moment for our council. We no longer can claim that we are just beginning and trying to create an identity. The “growing pains” of our early development must now become our learning moments to build our future upon. It is time for our council to bloom and grow, to continue to develop and mature. It is an exciting time for us!

As we begin our next years of development, we are faced with a future of change in New York State social studies. That’s right, it is that time again. The NYSED has begun the process of evaluating curriculum and plans have been drawn for considerations for curriculum changes, or at the very least, updating of our existing curricula. In fact, as you read this, meetings are being held to evaluate the English discipline, and Social Studies is next on the agenda. Our council plans to be an active voice, one to be heard at the highest levels of this issue. We will also play the role of listener. We want to hear what you have to say about the future of social studies education in our schools. This is an exciting time, an important time. Let’s help write the future.

I would like to write a few words of appreciation and recognition for our council’s first “Past President”, Jeff Kresge. Jeff fearlessly took on the challenge of leading this brand new council into the world of New York State social studies education. While always maintaining the life of a young, active Middle School social studies teacher, as well as a young, active husband, father, and thespian, Jeff directed us as we forged a dynamic organization, taking our place next to the other successful local social studies councils across New York State. Our annual conference has become the talk of the professional organizations of NY social studies. Our professional colleagues in the SED recognize this council as a new and active organization that they can count on for support and meaningful information. Jeff’s role as organizer, host, idea man, and President has led us on a path toward a bright and significant future. I will value his counsel as I attempt to continue our development. Long live the bow tie!

I am looking forward to the exciting years ahead for this council. As President, I can only promise dedication and effort. I have ideas, and they will develop into actions in the next few weeks and months. I urge each of you to make a commitment to, at the very least, be a communicator with us. Tell us what you think. Tell us what you need. Let’s chat.
